How Taking Turmeric Helps Your Body Block Fat and Your Liver REMOVE Toxins as Fast as Possible

Turmeric should be as much a part of your daily regimen as water. Turmeric is one of nature’s most powerful healers. In Ayurvedic medicine, turmeric is considered a “cleanser of the body.” Turmeric, which contains a powerful antioxidant called curcumin, has an abundant list of healing properties. The Chinese and Indians have been using turmeric for thousands of years to treat a wide variety of conditions and there are numerous studies that support turmeric’s healing powers. Dr. James Duke, renowned ethnobotanist, conducted one of the most comprehensive studies to date on turmeric and he found that turmeric outperformed many pharmaceuticals!

Here are five of the many reasons you should incorporate turmeric into your diet:

1. Anti-Inflammatory Alternative

Turmeric contains more than two dozen anti-inflammatory compounds. Inflammation leads to illness and disease. The average person is walking around with chronic inflammation due to the toxins we come in contact with every day. Results of studies comparing turmeric to ibuprofen illustrated that turmeric eased pain and improved function about as well as the ibuprofen. Over the counter anti-inflammatory agents can have a toxic effect on the body, such as ulcers and intestinal bleeding; turmeric produces no toxicity.

  1. Alleviate Arthritis Agony

Rheumatoid Arthritis is characterized by inflammation of the joints and tissues. Some clinical studies of patients with rheumatoid arthritis found that patients who supplement with turmeric find more relief than those who take anti-inflammatory drugs. In a 2012 study published in Phytotherapy Research, “Researchers found that the patients with rheumatoid arthritis who took 1,000 mg of curcumin per day had a 83.2% decrease in a measure of inflammation in swollen joints, compared to a 68.9% drop in patients who took an anti-inflammatory drug.” I tested this out on one my toughest clients, my mother, as she has suffered from arthritis for years.  In addition to a whole foods diet and a few tweaks to her lifestyle, I told her to sprinkle turmeric on everything she ate. Within a few weeks, she experienced noticeable relief from her arthritis symptoms.

  1. Alzheimer’s Assassin

More than 5 million people in the U.S. currently live with Alzheimer’s and it’s only getting worse. The U.S. has the third highest rate of Alzheimer’s, while India has the lowest amongst the developing world. Perhaps it’s the turmeric the Indians consume with almost every meal? Turmeric turns on the antioxidant producing soldiers that battle against the oxidative stress that can lead to Alzheimer’s. Turmeric has been shown to prevent the formation of plaques in the brain and therefore, may slow the progression of Alzheimer’s.

  1. Heart Health

Heart disease is the #1 killer of women. Turmeric inhibits free radical damage of fats, including cholesterol. Turmeric’s ability to prevent the oxidation of cholesterol may be beneficial for your heart. Some believe inflammation is the root cause of heart disease and, as discussed above, turmeric is an anti-inflammatory super star!

  1. Beat the Blues

Recent studies have shown that turmeric can alleviate and/or reduce depression. Anti-depression medication has many unpleasant side effects, including anxiety and suicidal thoughts, whereas turmeric has no side effects.  A study published last year in Phytotherapy Research found turmeric to be more effective than Prozac at treating depression.

Turmeric may seem like a magic potion and to some extent, it is! But, to maximize its benefits you should consume it in conjunction with a healthy diet and lifestyle. Don’t expect great results if you are sprinkling it on your cupcakes and Frito boats!  Sprinkle it on salads and omelets; add to your favorite quinoa/rice dish; or blend/juice the root. Consuming with black pepper helps to improve assimilation in the body.

You can also make a healing turmeric tea:

  • Boil 4 cups of water
  • Add 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • Simmer for 10 minutes and strain
  • Add lemon and honey to taste

My only warning is that it can stain, so I don’t recommend cooking with it while wearing your favorite white dress.

Turmeric is a relative of ginger and can be found in the produce section.  If purchasing the powder, grab the turmeric and not curry powder, as curry powder contains very small amounts of curcumin. If you don’t like the taste of turmeric, you can easily supplement. Look for products standardized for 95% curcuminoids. If you are pregnant, have gallstones or are being treated for any disease, consult with your doctor before supplementing.
